From Iceland — Warnings Issued Against Renting To Tourists Without Permit

Warnings Issued Against Renting To Tourists Without Permit

Published July 3, 2013

The Public Health Authority of Reykjavík issued dozens of warnings recently to property owners that have been renting to tourists without the appropriate permits to do so.
Before would-be landlords can legally rent their house or apartment to tourists (or anybody else, for that matter) they must first apply for a permit to do so from the Public Health Authority of Reykjavík and the police, RÚV reports.
In order to apply for a permit, one must first secure other documentation from a number of other government departments, which, as anybody who has required documents from government offices knows, can be a time consuming task. So if you’re looking to rent out your apartment you had best start the permitting process now.
