From Iceland — Geese Cause Traffic Accident

Geese Cause Traffic Accident

Published July 24, 2012

Animals have once again wreaked havoc on downtown traffic, as a flock of geese caused one injury and two damaged cars on Hringbraut last night.
Vísir reports that the geese in question were taking their time milling about on the highway, causing a car to suddenly slow down to avoid hitting them. While two cars behind this initial car were able to stop in time, a fourth one collided with the third, causing fire to erupt from the fourth car, spreading to the third.
One of the passengers was burned in the blaze, albeit not severely. Both cars were totaled. A photo of the wreckage can be seen here.
This is not the first time animals have caused traffic accidents in Reykjavík. Last year, a group of rabbits on on Reykjanesbraut at Bústaðavegur caused a three-car pile up. It was reported at the time that rabbits – whose population had been spiraling out of control – were causing numerous traffic accidents and inconveniences for commuters in the area.
Geese and ducks, especially in the summertime, can and will wander into traffic, so drivers should make a note to be wary of them in areas near ponds and lakes.
