From Iceland — Calls PM's Visit "Provocative"

Calls PM’s Visit “Provocative”

Published September 8, 2010

Another Faeroese MP has spoken out against Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir’s visit to the Faeroe Islands, calling her traveling to the country with her wife “provocative”.
As reported, Jenis av Rana, chairman of the Christian Centrist Party of the Faeroe Islands, told Faeroese media that for Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir to come to the Faeroe Islands with her wife was “a defiance of the Bible.” Apparently Alfred Olsen of the Alliance Party was in agreement, as he called the prime minister traveling with her wife “provocative”. He also said in an interview that he considered it “a crime against nature” for people of the same gender to live together.
What makes this statement additionally embarrassing is that it was Kajs Leos Johannesen, chairman of the Alliance Party, who invited Jóhanna to the Faeroe Islands in the first place.
Numerous Faeroese politicians have denounced the remarks, as well as other public figures, but Icelandic politicians – among them Minister of Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphéðinsson and Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson – have said that while Jenis and Alfred ought to be ashamed of themselves, their remarks will have no impact on Iceland’s relationship with the Faeroe Islands, and that the two countries will continue to be good friends.
