Double the amount of tourists have ventured to northern Iceland this summer than in years past, pleasing those working in the tourist industry of the north, RÚV reports.
“In May we began seeing a huge increase from last year. Tourists doubled in May and June, and in July the numbers keep increasing,” said Arnheiður Jóhannsdóttir, marketing director of the Tourist Board of Northern Iceland.
Unlike in years past, tourists are not concentrated in one area in the north; rather they are distributed across the many attractions and cities in that part of the country. Arnheiður would still like to see improved transportation infrastructure throughout the region to help tourists move about more easily. Specifically the road to Dettifoss needs renewal, which would increase the potential for tourist to get around throughout the year.
