From Iceland — Icelandic Art Exhibit Attracts Acclaim

Icelandic Art Exhibit Attracts Acclaim

Published June 10, 2011

A joint exhibition by artists Ólafur Ólafsson and Libia Castro at an international art exhibition in Venice has been receiving a warm critical reception.
Their exhibit, “Under Deconstruction”, opened last Friday at the 54th International Art Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia 2011. Since then, some three thousand guests have stopped by the pavillion to see the work, and the artists have been speaking with media from around the world.
“Under Deconstruction” is a mixed-media piece, combining song, video, dance and painting. This includes a video of choral group Hymnodia singing the text to the Icelandic constitution, and a video of the performance piece “Your Country Doesn’t Exist,” which features soprano Ásgerður Júníusdóttir in a gondola with a trumpeter and a guitarist, singing political declarations.
Ólafsson and Castro were kind enough to talk about their work in an interview with the Grapevine, which you can check out here.
