Iceland will be closing its embassy in Managua, Nicaragua on 1 August for economic reasons, Morgunblaðið reports. Iceland will otherwise continue to fulfill its end of the agreement signed between the two countries in 2006. Nicaraguan foreign minister Samuel Santos met with Sighvatur Björgvinsson, the director of the Icelandic Office of Developmental Cooperation met on Tuesday to discuss this very matter.
A joint statement reads in part:
“The Nicaraguan people and government thank their friends in Iceland for solidarity they’ve shown these years, which we will continue to enjoy in our diplomatic relations. At the same time we wish for our Icelandic friends that they are able to find a solution to their economic troubles and hope that in the near future we can enjoy the support and cooperation of Iceland.”
