Former police superintendent Geir Jón Þórisson says that a lecture he intends to give the Independence Party on the 2009 protests are based on his “personal experience” of the protests, and should not be considered an official interpretation of events. An official report on the protests, which he authored, remains hidden from public view, despite repeated requests from the public and members of parliament alike.
Geir, who ran for vice chairperson of the Independence Party earlier this year, was police superintendent during the 2008-2009 Pots and Pans Revolution. Shortly thereafter, he authored an official report on the protests, which has remained an internal police document ever since – neither the general public nor members of parliament have seen the report, despite numerous requests that the report’s findings be made public.
DV now reports that Geir will be giving a lecture today about the protests, at the Political School of the Independence Party, bearing the title “Action At Parliament: Protests at Austurvöll at the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009.”
Geir denied that his lecture will be based on, or will quote from, the secret police report on the protests. He told reporters that his lecture will be based on his “personal experience” of the protests.
His interpretation of events has sparked controversy at times, as he has contended in the past that members of parliament were directing protesters in secret. He did not, however, name which members of parliament supposedly directed which protesters, nor has he provided evidence to back up his claims.
