The Pirate Party is now the largest political party in Iceland, according to a new survey by MMR. Support for the Pirate Party measured at 23.4%, marking significant growth since the party received 5.1% of the vote in the 2013 elections.
Pirate Party MP Birgitta Jónsdóttir said she was “speechless and grateful for the trust,” according to mbl.is. Furthermore she said this shows people want to see a different kind a politics, and that this is a clear message to the other parties.
The survey also shows dwindling support for the ruling parties, with the Independence Party’s support at 23.4% and the Progressive Party’s support at 11.0% (although it should be noted that the error margin for a survey like this could be up to 3.1%).
The survey was conducted from March 13 to 18, after the controversial letter to the EU was sent on March 12.
