Björt Framtíð (“Bright Future”), the sister party of the Best Party, is currently polling ahead of ruling coalition partner the Leftist-Greens. Elections this April could put EU talks on shaky ground.
The results of the latest Gallup poll, RÚV reports, reveal some expected results. As has been the case for at least the past two years, the Independence Party is the strongest party in the country. Currently polling at 36.3%, this equals 26 of parliament’s 63 seats for them, an increase of ten seats. Coming in just behind them are current ruling coalition leaders the Social Democrats, with 19.1%, equaling 13 seats. The Progressives hold steady at 13.1%, equal to nine seats in parliament.
However, two big surprises to come from the poll show the Leftist-Greens currently sitting at 9.1% – the lowest they have polled in ten years – equal to only six of the 14 they currently have. At the same time, Björt Framtíð – formed just over a year ago, is currently polling at 12.3%, equal to nine seats in parliament.
If election results this April show similar standings, the conservatives – who have called for an end to accession talks with the EU – would control the new government. Whether they would form a coalition with the even more ardently anti-EU Progressives, or the very pro-EU Social Democrats, is still only a matter of conjecture – much like the elections themselves at this point.
