Former Presidential Candidate Scores With Photography Book

Published November 12, 2012

Perennial presidential candidate Ástþór Magnússon has released a photography book that has already attracted international attention for the stunning images within.
Many Grapevine readers may recognise the name from our pages – as early as 2004 the Grapevine has interviewed this peace activist and humanist during presidential campaign season. Despite his repeated campaigning, he has never fared very well, and has often complained that the media has purposefully shut him out of being covered fairly.
Seldom discussed, however, is Ástþór’s love of photography. A skilled photographer in his own right, Ástþór’s photo book Iceland Inside is already gaining international attention.
The Daily Mail recently featured some of his photos taken from the inside of Þríhnúkagígur, a very deep volcanic crater which, until very recently, was inaccessible. The photos show the gorgeous array of colours made through the intense heat and geological pressure in this volcanic cave.
In fact, Þríhnúkagígur is a fascinating story in itself, for the incredible depths it reaches. Due to the collapse of one area of the volcanic cave, non-professional spelunkers can now explore the inside easier than ever.
Below you can see video taken from within Þríhnúkagígur itself:
