More than 15,000 Icelanders have a signed a petition to put 10% of the state’s revenue from alcohol taxes toward alcohol and drug addiction recovery programs.
The initiative, spearheaded by the SÁÁ, would go toward helping nearly 900 of the most vulnerable addicts, some of whom are homeless, Vísir reports. Funds would also help another 10,000 people who have tried to find help but continue to struggle with addiction. Gunnar Smári Egilsson, SÁÁ chairman, said the public has been receptive to the tax.
“Over the last six days, more than five thousand signatures have been added,” he told Vísir. “We have found a lot of support and goodwill and we know that there are many signatures to be added in the next days.”
