What will become of the popular downtown nightclub NASA will be decided and announced tomorrow.
As reported last January, Pétur Þór Sigurðsson, who bought the building some time ago, had decided that it will be torn down this summer to make way for a hotel. This led to a public outcry, with the eventual creation of an “idea contest” for what NASA’s new form should be. Although the contest is hosted by Reykjavík city council, Pétur is himself one of the judges.
RÚV now reports that the announcement of a formal decision will be made public tomorrow.
The city of Reykjavík, in cooperation with Architect Society of Iceland, have overseen the contest, which is divided into two parts. In one part, participants were asked to re-imagine the area flanked by Aðalstræti, Hafnarstræti, Veltusund, Vallarstæti, Thorvaldsensstræti and Kirkjustræti. In the other, contestants were asked to re-imagine NASA’s main building. The winner of that contest will be announced tomorrow.
The other ideas offered as to how the building could be changed will be on display, in an exhibition that will continue for a month.
