From Iceland — Earthquake Felt In Reykjavík

Earthquake Felt In Reykjavík

Published January 4, 2012

A small earthquake in southwest Iceland was felt up to 30 km away in the capital city.
Many city residents reported feeling the tremours shortly after 21:00 last night. According to Vísir the epicentre was located about 2.7km northwest of Krýsuvík, on the Suðurnes peninsula.
Measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, it was not a particularly dangerous earthquake, even if it had occurred directly under the city centre. However, some 20 aftershocks were reported.
Krýsuvík is a very geothermally active area in an already geothermally active country. A quake in 2000 caused the bed of the lake Kleifarvatn to crack open, into which a great deal of water drained. 20% of the lake’s surface has disappeared since then.
