While the price of alcohol has raised over the past three years, street drugs have gotten cheaper, the National Centre of Addiction Medicine (SÁÁ) reports.
SÁÁ conducts a monthly survey of the price of street drugs, based on information they receive from people checking themselves in at the rehab in Vogur. Their latest findings have shown some interesting trends.
With the crash of 2008, the price of alcohol went up, and not solely due to inflation – taxes raised on alcohol contributed to this as well. At the same time, the price of street drugs also rose.
However, at the beginning of 2010, the price of street drugs began to decrease, even as the cost of alcohol rose. SÁÁ explains this difference by pointing out that while the government can and does raise taxes on alcohol, there are no taxes on street drugs, and so importers and distributors are able to flexibly adjust prices in keeping with public demand.
According to their data, a gramme of hash is now about 2,500 ISK, marijuana is about 3,300 ISK, amphetamine is about 4,300 ISK, cocaine is about 14,830 ISK, and a tablet of Ritalin is about 950 ISK.
