There is a very good possibility that Iceland will have a snowy Christmas, although some regions of the country have better chances than others.
As reported, Iceland has been in the midst of an unusually powerful cold snap for a few days now, and temperatures are expected to remain low for the time being. But will this translate into a white Christmas?
Meteorologist Sigurður Þ. Ragnarsson, speaking to DV, certainly believes so.
“I would say that the strongest chances for a white Christmas would be in the north,” he said. “In the southern corner, Christmas could be a little red.” Icelanders refer to a Christmas without snow as being “red”.
Sigurður added that while weather forecasts are inexact from day to day, they do give fairly good indications of general weather conditions on a monthly basis. December is predicted to be cold, but there do not seem to be any storms on the horizon.
This bears the possibility that there may not be that much snow in Reykjavík’s corner of Iceland, although low temperatures combined with even low levels of precipitation could mean a white Christmas for the capital after all.
