Icelandic gaming company CCP will be laying off about 20% of their staff today, leaving many foreign employees with no choice but to leave the country.
CCP is the company behind the popular MMORPG Eve Online, and was one of the only companies after the financial collapse of 2008 to report profits. By all accounts, the tech industry – with its international demand and need for few resources beyond human brain power – seemed like the solid growth industry for Iceland.
However, the company has regretfully announced that it will be laying off about 20% of their global staff, including foreigners living in Iceland who will have to leave the country shortly after they are fired.
The 34 people slated to go are mostly Icelanders, and the company has promised to provide assistance in finding new work to those staff it can no longer employ.
CCP will also be making cuts in their offices in Georgia, USA. In fact, the company says in a statement to the press that heavier cuts are going to be made there.
The reason for the firings, the company explains, is to allow greater focus on their more popular games and continue their development on a larger scale.
CORRECTION:CCP will not be making further cuts to their Georgia offices, however, it will be primarily affected by these changes. The Grapevine regrets this error.
