The release of Björk’s new album, Biophilia, has initiated an ambitious project with Reykjavík, the University of Iceland, Airwaves and primary school children.
In a press release from the artist, it is announced that a special “sound science” workshop will be created especially for children in conjunction with the album, in cooperation with capital officials, the University of Iceland, and Iceland Airwaves.
The project will be similar to one the artist initiated in Manchester last spring. The artist states that Biophilia is not just an album, but rather an attempt to join art and science.
In keeping with this, the workshop – available to 48 children aged 10 to 12 from three Reykjavík primary schools, and lasting four days – will teach children a great deal about some of nature’s wonders, such as crystals, black holes, lightning, DNA and the force of gravity. Music from the album will be employed with these lessons.
Experts in the fields of music and science will work alongside the children, and the children themselves will even get the chance to play with some of the instruments Björk used on the album. They will also get a chance to use the Biophilia app developed for the iPad.
Biophilia was released on Monday. The artist will be performing two concerts during Iceland Airwaves.
