A Canadian student at the University of Iceland has been deported, due to the fact that he is under 18 years old.
Vísir reports that 17-year-old Jordan Chark is the student in question. Many Icelanders became familiar with Chark when we appeared on the television show Ísland í dag last spring. He taught himself Icelandic over the course of three years, although he has no particular ties to the country, and asked for Icelandic penpals through a video he posted online.
Jordan arrived in Iceland last month to begin taking a course in Icelandic at university, and showed a great deal of promise in his capacity to learn the language. Student housing had also been arranged for him.
However, the Directorate of Immigration caught up with Jordan, and told him he was to leave at once. This is because by law, no one under the age of 18 can be issued a residence permit. Jordan will turn 18 in December, and so he will be able to return at that time.
His friends wished him a tearful goodbye yesterday, but they can rest assured Jordan will return in a few months.
