According to a poll conducted by Eyjan, very few people are happy with the job the prime minister is doing. At the same time, the majority of Icelanders want the government to finish its term.
A slowly recovering economy, cuts to the budget, and now the failure of Icesave III have caused many to speculate that the government could be on its last legs. A poll conducted by Eyjan which asked respondents “Are you satisfied with the job performance of Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir?” showed only 27.2% saying Yes. 49.8% said No, while 22.9% either were not sure or did not want to say.
Shortly after Icesave III was defeated in a public referendum, conservative chairman Bjarni Benediktsson – who himself voted in favour of the Icesave agreement – submitted a bill calling for a vote of no confidence, telling reporters that he wanted to see new elections as soon as possible.
However, when Eyjan asked respondents, “Should parliament be shut down and new elections be held?”, only 37.5% said Yes. 45.9% were against the idea, and 16.7% were not sure or would not say.
These results might indicate that while most Icelanders are less than pleased with the job the current government is doing, they do not necessarily see anyone in the opposition offering better solutions to the problems the country faces.
