The results of the latest Gallup poll on the matter show that a solid majority intend to vote in favour of the Icesave agreement up for referendum this April.
RÚV reports that of those asked to take part in the poll, 73% were prepared to answer, 22% said they had no position, and 5% were not sure if they even intended to vote.
Of those who did have a definite answer on Icesave, 63% said they intended to vote in favour of the agreement, which was voted into law by a 70% majority in parliament last month, but was subsequently vetoed by the president and referred for public referendum. The referendum will be held on 9 April.
At the same time, 34% said they intended to vote against it, and 3% said they intended to turn in blank ballots.
The major motivating factor behind the Yes votes seems to be economic consequences. 61% said they believed that rejecting the latest Icesave agreement could have negative economic effects on Iceland.
Curiously enough, despite the majority saying they intend to vote in favour of the agreement, 53% also said they supported the president’s decision to veto the law and put it up for referendum. 39% disagreed with the decision, and 8% had no opinion either way.
