A ruling of guilty or innocent will be made against the so-called Reykjavík 9 in Reykjavík District Court, early tomorrow morning.
As most of our readers are aware by now, nine protesters stand charged with attacking parliament in December 2008. The matter has been highly controversial, however, as the official version of events contradicts video footage of the incident. Furthermore, parliament security lost most of the surveillance video from that day, and police gave often conflicting testimony on the stand.
Smugan now reports that tomorrow morning at 8:30, a ruling will be made in court over the matter.
Magnús Sveinn Helgason, one of the supporters of the Reykjavík 9, pointed out to Smugan a concerned raised by many Icelanders over the timing of the ruling. That is to say, that an early morning ruling has been decided in order to reduce the number of possible people who will be at the courthouse itself.
This, Magnús worries, is not a promising sign that the accused will be acquitted.
If convicted of the charge of attacking parliament, the accused face a minimum sentence of one year in prison.
