Reykjavík mayor Jón Gnarr today gave Women Of Multicultural Ethnicity Network (WOMEN) the first “cultural cards”, or menningarkort, which the city has newly made to encourage people to take part in Reykjavík’s cultural offerings.
As explained on the Reykjavík Art Museum home page, the cultural card is a card that grants the cardholder free entry to the Reykjavík Art Museum (Hafnarhús, Kjarvalsstaðir and Ásmundarsafn), Reykjavík City Museum (Árbær Museum and Settlement Exhibition 871±2) and as a library card at the Reykjavík City Library. The card costs 5,000 ISK and is valid for one year.
The mayor presented the very first cards to WOMEN, which was founded in 2003 to help promote equality between immigrants and nationals, and to bring special attention to the issues foreign women in Iceland face.
At the presentation of the cards, the mayor said in part, “We live in a multicultural society. The key is to enjoy the variety that can be found in daily life and culture. The Women Of Multicultural Ethnicity Network has had a key role in the multicultural medium, and deserves thanks for a job well done.”
