Jenis av Rana, chairman of the Christian Centrist Party of the Faeroe Islands, told Faeroese media that for Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir to come to the Faeroe Islands with her wife was “a defiance of the Bible.” Legislators from both countries have harshly denounced the MP’s remarks.
Jenis, speaking to Icelandic radio, added furthermore that he would not dine with Jóhanna, because “to do so would be to show acceptance of gay marriage, which is against the platform of the Centrist party.”
Legislator Kaj Leó Jóhannesen, as well as Högni Hoydal, chairman of the National Party, said that Jenis ought to be ashamed of himself for speaking in such a manner to the prime minister of a country that has always treated the Faeroese as equals.
Icelandic Foreign Minister Össur Skarphéðinsson agreed, but added that Jenis’ remarks will have no effect on Iceland’s relationship with the Faeroe Islands.
