Three former ministers could face charges of negligence or mismanagement, and will be called before the parliamentary committee this summer.
Vísir reports that the parliamentary committee has been meeting regularly since the Special Investigative Commission (SIC) report was released. One of the purposes of the committee is to determine whether or not former ministers bear responsibility for the fall 2008 economic collapse, due to either negligence, incompetence, or purposeful mismanagement.
The three former ministers to be called before the committee are former prime minister Geir H. Haarde, former Minister of Business Björgvin G. Sigurðsson, and former Minister of Finance Árna M. Mathiesen.
Parliamentary committee chairman Atli Gíslason told Vísir that the men will likely be called before the committee in August, although it has not yet been decided if they will be asked to physically appear, or simply send in written commentary to the committee’s findings. More importantly, though, the committee will decide if any of these three should face charges.
The longest sentence any of them could receive for mismanagement and negligence is two years in prison. A decision on whether or not to press charges will be made in the fall.
