A ship that sent out a distress call to Faxaflóa harbour yesterday and triggered a 180 strong search and rescue mission remains unfound, reports RÚV.
Just before 3 pm yesterday afternoon the crew aboard a ship in Faxaflóa bay sent out a distress call, saying the ship was sinking. That was the only transmission received from the ship and there was no indication of the ship’s location.
The Icelandic Coast Guard mobilised divers, rescue boats, the Coast Guard’s helicopter and almost 200 people to participate in the search effort but bad weather and visibility halted the search overnight.
Tracking down precisely what ship sent out the distress call has been troublesome as ships are required to declare themselves to the Coast Guard and Faxaflóa harbour. There are however no ships unaccounted for in the harbour.
The helicopter search will continue today.
