From Iceland — Hunt For Rare Z Bank Notes Is On

Hunt For Rare Z Bank Notes Is On

Published December 17, 2013

Collectors are now on the hunt for the new 10,000 ISK bank note, after discovering some of them have rare serial numbers which make the bills worth keeping rather than spending.

As reported, the Central Bank put a new 10,000 ISK bank note into circulation in October.

Icelandic bank notes normally have a serial number starting with the letter H. However, for the first time in bank note printing, flawed bills were replaced by others that have serial numbers starting with the letter Z.

Sigurður Pálmason, owner of the Collectors Emporium, told daily Morgunblaðið that collectors had discovered the Z-bank notes by coincident and now there was a lot of excitement in the air.

“Obviously, this is the peak of nerdism,” Sigurður said, adding that there were other factors involved too, such as the actual serial numbers and the signatures on the bank notes.

One of the appeals about the Z-marked bank notes is that the serial numbers are quite low, Sigurður explained.
