Prime Minster Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir has said this morning that the opposition has been steadfast in preventing progress in constitutional discussions with “violent filibustering,” RÚV reports. She further specified that her remarks were about the Independence Party and Progressive Party.
Rather than moving forward with discussing the bill as it is currently written by the constitutional committee, Independence Party MP Birgir Ármannsson asked the Prime Minister that party chairmen could put forward new ideas for constitutional changes. This despite there having been a national referendum agreeing on many points to be included in the new constitution.
The Progressive Party has been said to take issue with the constitutional provision limiting privatization of natural resources in Iceland, and the Independence Party opposes any changes to be made to the existing fishing quota system.
Parliament is in session today and tomorrow and will continue to address the long list of pending cases on the agenda.
