1,332 kilometres. 14 days. 3 middle-aged friends on electric scooters.
The Rocking Rollettes – Rannveig Grettarsdóttir, Bjarney (Eyja) Ludviksdóttir and Rúna Magnúsdottir have embarked on an exciting new adventure. They’ll be scooting the entirety of Iceland’s legendary Route 1 at a maximum speed of 25km/h and live-streaming their experiences on social media for up to 10 hours each day.
In the light of current travel restrictions, the Rolletes hope their virtual tour will satisfy international viewers’ wanderlust, helping them to get to know Iceland’s sublime countryside.
The trio will depart from Reykjavik’s Árbæjarsafn Museum at 10:00 am GMT on June 22nd and if all goes according to plan, they’ll be back in the capital by July 5th.
One friend has a bad knee, the other has a balance problem and the third is “on the brink of a nervous breakdown”, but they won’t let that stop them.
They plan to take turns on the electric scooters, charging the batteries in a car which will be travelling close behind them to provide support and protect them from traffic.

Bjarney first came up with the idea to scoot around Iceland. Inspired by the news of six Icelandic women swimming the English Channel last Autumn, she texted her friends: “We need to get our act together ladies. It’s time for us to do something historical.”
Initially she suggested a wakeboard race around the island, but when reminded about the Atlantic Ocean’s low temperatures and huge waves, she settled on the humble electric scooter.
“This kind of travelling has never been executed before and we are proud to say we are the first to make this attempt”, explain the trio on their website.
