One of the rarest weather events to occur in Iceland, lightning, has been recorded on video entirely by accident.
Iceland is well-known for its unpredictable and, at times, volatile weather. For as many weather conditions that one might encounter here, however, lightning is very rare – lightning requires banks of warm air and cool air to meet each other, but currents warm enough seldom reach the north Atlantic island.
Lightning does strike on occasion, though, as it did last night in the midst of high winds and snowfall. Vísir reports that Sævar Már Kjartansson managed to capture the event on video.
“I was outside the post office in Garðabær,” he told reporters, “when I intended to take a funny video to put on Facebook and wish everyone a happy summer,” when lightning struck. You can see the event happen at the 0:09 mark in the video below.
“It was very strange,” Sævar Már concluded. “You don’t connect snow with lightning.”
