Details are emerging about the Aeroflot plans that crashed at Keflavík International Airport yesterday morning, resulting in just one injury among the five people on board.
When initial reports of the crash were made yesterday it was reported that the landing gear was not engaged, causing the Sukhoi Superjet 100 to land on its belly. It was not clear at the time whether there was a malfunction with the landing gear or if the pilot forgot to lower the landing gear.
It is now known that the jet was in training when the crash occurred, RÚV reports. The plane model is not yet being used in commercial flights and had crashed during another training flight in Indonesia last year, killing 50 people.
The plane is severely damaged. Icelandic investigators interviewed the small flight crew yesterday, however local authorities have not been able to acquire the flight recorders in order to determine the cause of the crash.
Representatives of insurance companies and Russian aviation officials will be arriving in Keflavík later today to examine the situation more closely, RÚV reports. Only after their arrival will it be determined when and how to move the jet from its current position on the tarmac.
