From Iceland — Bus Service To Be Increased

Bus Service To Be Increased

Published May 4, 2012

The capital area bus service company Strætó hf. has announced that they will be lengthening bus service hours, and increasing the frequency of passing buses.
According to a statement on the bus company site, an agreement between local municipalities and the Icelandic government will be signed on May 7, wherein the government agrees to fund 1.25 billion ISK over the next ten years to improve area bus service. These funds will be paid out with 350 million ISK in 2012, and the remaining 900 million paid over the years to follow.
The agreement also includes plans to double bus service in the summer and fall. The reasoning behind the agreement is that increased bus service will eventually lead to lower costs that the company will need to pay out to run the service, and will as well reduce air pollution, as bus service will be a more widely available option for capital area residents.
Specifically, these are the most significant changes being made:
All bus routes that run in the evenings will run an hour later than they do now, and buses will start running two hours earlier on Saturdays. Route 2 will start running again in the evenings and on weekends. Route 5 will start running in the evenings and on weekends between Sundahöfn and Hlemmur. Routes 13, 24 and 28 will begin running every 15 minutes during rush hour. Routes 2, 4, 5, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 24 and 28 will begin operating half-hourly in the evenings and on weekends, and routes 1, 3, 6, 11, 15, 18 and 19 will operate an hour later in the evenings, ending at 1:00.
The summer bus schedule begins June 3. For more information on any changes to routes you use, you can call 540 2700.
