The Icelandic Art Centre has announced artist Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir will represent Iceland at the 2026 Venice Biennale.

Ásta is described as one of the foremost installation artists in Iceland, known for breaking the mould. In addition to her visual artistry, Ásta is also a published poet and a musician, often mixing her disciplines to create intricate pieces.

She has exhibited her work in places such as the Reykjavík Art Museum, ARS Longa, and MOT. Ásta was nominated for the French Bernard-Heidsieck-Centre Pompidou awards in 2021.

Ásta’s work is described as being characterised by sensitivity and rawness, where humour and gravity, tradition and progression are woven.

Iceland has participated in the Venice Biennale since 1960. The 2024 contribution was the piece ‘That’s a Very Large Number — A Commerzbau’ by Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir, which will be exhibited in The National Gallery of Iceland in 2025.
