This week is going to bring plenty of rain and wind to western Iceland, while the east will remain dry, with possible snow there this weekend.
As the current forecast from the Icelandic Met Office shows, rain will begin to visit western Iceland, including the Reykjavík metropolitan area, on Tuesday evening. Winds in Reykjavík in particular could reach as high as 20m/s, while most other parts of the west will see winds ranging from 10 to 15m/s.
As not all rain is created equal, it bears mentioning that the heaviest rainfall around Iceland’s capital will pour down on Thursday and Friday. In fact, Friday will be a very rainy day for the entirety of western Iceland.
As is often the case, the weather in the east will be decidedly different over the days to come. There should be little precipitation and light winds for most of the week, with the possibility of snowfall from Friday night through the weekend. In fact, temperatures in the area could reach as high as 20°—even warmer than it often gets in East Iceland in the summer.
Predicting the weather is still an inexact science, so if you are planning on driving around Iceland this week, be sure and check the weather and road conditions before you get behind the wheel.
