From Iceland — Road To Askja Flooded

Road To Askja Flooded

Published July 22, 2013

The road to Askja in North Iceland is almost impassable due to flooding.

Glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum washed away a floodbank between river Lindá and Herðubreiðarlindir which was built only last summer and now covers around 100 metres of the road.

“The road isn’t completely closed but we’re diverting smaller cars away,” Hrönn Guðmundsdóttir, ranger in Askja, told mbl.is. “At the moment, large, special equipped SUVs can pass, if their drivers are experienced, but the condition can change rapidly now that the water has started undermining the road.”

Representatives from the Icelandic Road Admission and the local SAR units are following the developments in the area closely and repairs will start as soon as possible. In the meantime, anyone traveling in the area should follow news and listen after announcements in the next couple of days.
