A man who fought for custody of his cat from his ex-husband is taking his case to the Supreme Court.
DV reports that Juan Carlos originally took his ex to Reykjavík District Court for custody of what was their cat, Ita. The court found in the ex-husband’s favour.
The court’s decision was based on proof of ownership. Juan Carlos contends that the cat was registered as his in January 2011. When he and his husband split up in November, they did so with the agreement that Ita live at the ex’s place, and that he could visit the cat regularly. When Juan Carlos attempted to move the cat to a new home, his ex refused to give up Ita, and he has not seen the cat since.
The court found that records of ownership at dyraaudkenni.is convincingly prove that his ex-husband is the owner of the cat, and that Juan Carlos has not sufficiently proven ownership. It was furthermore ruled that he pay his ex-husband 200,000 ISK in legal fees.
Rather than settling for this ruling, Juan Carlos has opted to appeal, and will be taking the custody fight to the Supreme Court. He has also made a Facebook group – Help To Get My Cat Back – appealing to the general public for help in meeting these costs and gaining custody of Ita.
