From Iceland — Pub Owner To Sue City

Pub Owner To Sue City

Published June 19, 2012

The owner of the bars Mónakó and Monte Carlo intends to take the city of Reykjavík and capital police to court for not issuing him a new licence to operate.
As reported, the directorship of the Residents Association has expressed support for the wishes of people living near the pubs, which many have regarded as a haven for drugs and violence. The problem has apparently become so great that even those complaining about the clubs have been reluctant to do so under their own names. Business owners have also complained that the clientele which Mónakó and Monte Carlo attracts have driven away business.
Last December, the police and city council refused to renew the operating licences of these two pubs, but the Ministry of the Interior argued that city council did not have the power to take away their licences based on these complaints.
RÚV now reports that Margeir Margeirsson, the owner of both places, intends to sue both city council and Reykjavík police over the matter. He argues that they have had no substantial grounds by which to shut down his establishments, and is seeking both damages and to have the legal fees paid. He added furthermore that if the city is interested in buying the pubs, they can make him an offer.
No word yet as to when the matter will go to court.
