Sections of downtown Reykjavík will be made pedestrian-only this Saturday, with car traffic to resume after Christmas.
Skólavörðustígur, from Bergstaðastræti down to Bankastræti, as well as Laugavegur from Frakkarstígur to Skólavörðustígur, will be completely closed to car traffic from this weekend until after the holidays, RÚV reports.
In a statement from city hall, city officials recognised the success of closing this same portion of downtown last summer. In light of this, they decided to take the same decision for the holiday season.
Merchants will no doubt be pleased with the decision, as many reported that their businesses did better during the street closings.
There will also be numerous Christmas-related events downtown during this time, such as visits from Santa Claus, a women’s choir, and a brass band.
The area will be opened to car traffic on December 27.
