Cases of oral cancer are expected to rise as chewing tobacco usage increases around the country, according to RÚV.
Selfoss dentist, Hallur Halldórsson, told RÚV that young people using chewing tobacco while they sleep is becoming more common than in the past. He says both male and female students as young as seventh grade are using using oral tobacco regularly, and some are doing it while they sleep.
The survival rate for those diagnosed with mouth cancer is very low. In general the quality of life deteriorates with the inability to use the mouth, jaw and/or tongue.
