If current numbers are extrapolated to the end of the year, 2011 should mark a new record in terms of the number of tourists visiting Iceland in a single year.
Vísir reports that this year will see some 1.8 million passengers on board Icelandair.
Icelandair director Birkir Hólm Guðnason says that 2011 has seen a 20% increase in tourists to Iceland, which equals about 600,000 visitors to Iceland.
Furthermore, the “drop-off point” for tourism – in the months just following summer – already seems to be not much of a drop-off after all. Bookings for Icelandair in September, October and November are up 30%.
2010 was a rocky year for tourism, with the Eyjafjallajökull eruption resulting in many cancellations, but even with the relatively low numbers contrasting with this year’s tourist volume, 600,000 tourists breaks all previous records for a single year.
