Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon was met with the boos of thousands of football supporters when he arrived as a special guest for a match, and it had little to do with his political position.
Pressan reports that the minister arrived at a match between the teams KR and Þór last Saturday. KR is from west Reykjavík, and Þór is from Akureyri. Steingrímur is from Þistilfjörður, in the northeast, and as such would probably be a Þór supporter.
When his arrival as a special guest was announced, it is reported that the stadium erupted in a deafening roar of boos. This was especially the case when KR won, 2-0, and Steingrímur was to give the winning trophy to KR.
Steingrímur was at one time a sportscaster, so chances are he probably understands just how devoted some fans can be. Gylfi Þór Orrason, the vice director of the Football Association of Iceland, concurs, telling Pressan that the minister did not take it personally, and knew well beforehand that he would likely not be the most popular person on the pitch.
