From Iceland — Icelanders' Cultural Consumption

Icelanders’ Cultural Consumption

Published March 11, 2010

The Social Sciences Department of the University of Iceland has released the results of a survey it conducted for the Minstry of Education and Cultural Affairs, regarding what cultural activities Icelanders most enjoy.
According to the survey, about 76% of Icelanders went to the cinema at least once last year. 60% went to the theatre, 59% to concerts, 53% to the library, and 38% to a sporting event. Perhaps unsurprisingly, men were more likely than women to attend sporting events.
Other results of the survey show that university-educated people who live in the capital area are more likely to attend cultural events than those who live outside the capital and are less educated.
Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs Katrín Jakobsdóttir told RÚV that the minstry wants to take a new course of action with regards to the cultural life of Icelanders, and intends to organize a conference in April to that end.
