Reykjavík’s 11th annual Gay Pride Festival got underway yesterday evening with an opening ceremony at Háskólabíó, featuring performances by Bubbi Morthens, Dísa and Páll Óskar. Reykjavík’s mayor, Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir, was also on hand at the university cinema to sign on for three more years of cooperation with the Gay Pride Festival. The 2008 Pride weekend attracted a record number of revellers to the streets of Reykjavík, with up to 90,000 people enjoying the fabulousness of the weekend.
The festivities will continue all weekend, with dances tonight at Batteríið and London-Reykjavík, continuous parties all weekend at BARBARA and, the highlight of the festival, the Pride Parade, which will make its way from Hlemmur to the harbour Saturday beginning at 2 pm.
