Iceland’s men’s football team finished 1-1 against Ukraine yesterday in their first game of the World Cup qualifiers.
RÚV reports that Alfreð Finnbogason scored a goal within the first five minutes of the game. However, Ukraine’s Andriy Yarmolenko came back to tie it up at the 41 minute mark.
The result bodes well for Iceland, and Icelanders are still quite taken with the national men’s team, who smote their way to the quarter finals of the Euros last summer before being defeated by France, 5-2.
If last summer’s enthusiasm, both at home and abroad, is any indication, it is likely that football fans will positively lose their minds if Iceland advances to any significant degree through the qualifiers.
