Reykjavík Pride (Hinsegin dagar), a six day celebration emphasizing LGBTQIA visibility, solidarity, and yes, pride, starts today.
Reykjavík Pride began in 1993 simply with the parade, or ‘freedom walk’ (frelsisganga), and has since blossomed to include lectures and talks, Q&As, literary readings, film screenings, performances, balls, parties, and much more. And while the festival’s headlining event is still Saturday’s Pride Parade, which winds from Vatnsmýrarvegur to the concert stage at Arnarhóll, this week’s packed schedule is sure to offer something for everyone.
The 2014 festival will also place particular emphasis on giving “a louder voice to the intersex community,” says Chair of Reykjavík Pride Eva María Þórarinsdóttir Lange, and will host a screening of the documentary “Intersexion” and a talk entitled “The Intersex Experience,” among others.
Check out the full program—with events in both Icelandic and English—on the festival website here. Not sure where to start? Reykjavík Pride Vice President Baldvin Kári has you covered with his “Tips for a Very Merry Pride” (at the bottom of the page). And, if you’re planning to attend multiple ticketed events, you may also want to consider purchasing a Pride Pass (it comes with a goodie bag!).
