An explosion of still unknown causes rocked an apartment complex in Reykjavík yesterday.
The explosion took place at 11:00 yesterday morning. According to witnesses, Vísir reports, the explosion was so massive that surrounding neighbours thought it was an earthquake. Glass from the apartment rained down on a nearby playground, where fortunately no children were.
Police are currently investigating what may have caused the blast, which is still of unknown origin. A gas tank used for grilling was found undamaged at the scene. The director of the bomb unit of the Rescue Squad expressed confusion as to why his unit was not called to the scene yesterday, but will be investigating the scene today.
The apartment in which the blast occurred has been completely destroyed. One man is currently in critical condition due to the blast, in intensive care. No deaths and no other injuries were reported.
