Members of parliament from four parties have submitted a parliamentary proposal to set up webcams all over Iceland, at many of the country’s better known natural settings.
The proposal calls for the creation of a “webcam museum of Iceland”, which would require setting up some 150 webcams all over the country, so that “it will be possible to experience Iceland in real time from anywhere in the world, and excite interest in getting to know [the country] more.”
The proposal was backed by 13 members of parliament from all parties except The Movement. Apart from such well-known locations as Gullfoss, Þingvellir, and Geysir, they also propose setting up such cameras in fish processing plants, construction sites, and whale watching tours.
Each camera would cost 1.5 million ISK, but would be solar powered. Despite the costs, the proposal’s advocates believe that the project would not only serve to attract tourists to the country, but would also serve as an online record of the state of the country at any given moment.
