The human rights group Amnesty International will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this Saturday. In honour of the occasion, the mayor of Reykjavík has ordained a temporary name change for Laugavegur, downtown’s main shopping street.
Vísir reports that this Friday, Laugavegur (“washing way”) will be changed to Mannréttindavegur (“human rights way”) for three days, in celebration of Amnesty International’s 50th anniversary.
A statement from city hall reads, “This naming is very well-suited to the occasion as Laugavegur was originally created to ease the journey of washer-women taking their laundry to Laugardal. They walked a long way with laundry on their backs, washing in difficult conditions in all kinds of weather.”
Amnesty International and the Grapevine encourage everyone to walk down Human Rights Way on Saturday to celebrate the anniversary.
