The latest Gallup poll shows very little change in support for the different political parties, despite the Icesave referendum occuring between polls.
The Independence Party has the most support, at 33%, and the Progressives have 14%. Both had the same levels of support before the Icesave referendum, for which they fought hard. The Social Democrats and Leftist-Greens each now have the support of 24% of poll respondents. The Social Dems actually went up a percentage point since the previous poll, while the Leftist-Greens went down two.
However, The Best Party – a joke party created by comedian Jón Gnarr to satirize Icelandic politics – comes in with 14% for the municipal elections. This is two points higher than they scored in the Fréttablaðið poll.
Gnarr told reporters that they are finalizing their platform and campaign promises. Among these are to get a polar bear for the zoo, and make the swimming pools – and the towels within – free for everyone. He has also proposed setting up a toll booth between Seltjarnarnes and Reykjavík, to charge Seltjarnarnes residents an entry fee for coming into Reykjavík and using the services therein.
