From Iceland — Human Trafficking Growing Problem

Human Trafficking Growing Problem

Published October 22, 2009

Iceland’s agent at Interpol says that human trafficking is becoming a growing problem in Iceland.
Vísir reports that human trafficking is considered one of the fastest-growing illegal industries in Europe. Europol – the international law enforcement unit of the European Union – believes that special operations need to be initiated to combat the practice, as it is fast eclipsing drug trafficking as the revenue of choice in organised crime circles. It is believed that some 800,000 people worldwide are victims of human trafficking.
At a press conference given today, police said that they have put themselves in contact with Europe’s database on human trafficking to help prevent the importation and sale of women and children, with special emphasis placed on the police of Suðurnes, where the international airport is located. Eight people are currently in custody suspected of engaging in human trafficking in Iceland. No one has as yet confessed.
