An episode of the new version of Dr. Who managed to reference the Icelandic economic collapse.
The episode, which aired on the BBC on Saturday, featured one of the main protagonists stealing a precious chalice. When confronted about her theft by Doctor Who, the character, Lady Christina, explains that need drove her to theft.
“My father lost everything he had,” she said. “He invested in Icelandic banks.”
Dr. Who is a science fiction television show that has gone through many, many incarnations over the decades, having been played by different actors. Throughout, it has enjoyed a small but loyal following and achieved such a strong cult status in recent years that the BBC felt it necessary to revive the show.
Perhaps one of the more memorable episodes of Doctor Who, broadcast in 1987 in America on public television, was one that was actually interrupted by a pirate transmission that effectively knocked the show off of the airwaves to transmit live video of a man in a Max Headroom mask ranting incoherently.
